Ideas For Wedding Reception Speeches

Wedding reception speeches are an essential part of the celebration. They provide some enjoyable moments as all family members and friends get the recall humorous incidents relating to the couple in their speeches. If you are a close friend or a family member of the couple, then prepare a wedding speech beforehand for the reception party. Delivering an impressive speech is not as easy as it may seem to be.

Public speaking is not a forte of most people. So, if you might have to give a speech or raise a wedding toast make prior preparations and practice well. All eyes will be fixed on you while you speak - better do your homework.

Before you start writing down what you intend to speak, take a quick look at what needs to be omitted in your speech.

What To Leave Out?

  • Differentiate between humor and vulgarity. If you are trying to crack some joke, it should not have sexual undertones as there the elderly might take offence. Jokes should be mentioned in good taste and not with any malicious intention of offending someone. A funny wedding speech is welcome, but not a vulgar one.
  • Do not discuss past girlfriends, affairs or break-ups. This is not the place to do so when two people are ready to exchange vows.
  • Any type of financial aspect should be clearly kept out of a wedding reception speech. It can make the occasion really embarrassing.
  • Personal incidents should be mentioned only after prior approval from the person whom it concerns. Do not disclose any secrets.
  • Do not make any prior assumptions about the couple. No second hand information should be used as it might be incorrect, and you will make a mess of your speech.

Reception speeches can be quite tough to write as you often know only one half of the couple. Thus, it is advisable to keep it short and sweet. Just mention that the newly weds share a very special place in your heart and you wish them the best in their future life. Wrap up your speech with a wedding toast if you are required to do so, or pass on the chance to speak to the next person. Before sitting down, do not forget to thank the people present who have been instrumental in making the wedding possible.

A good wedding reception speech needs to have the following qualities -

  • It should be entertaining.
  • It should involve the guests to make them feel special for gracing the occasion.
  • It should not have very flowery language that makes it difficult to understand.
  • The speech should come straight from your heart. The sentiments show your involvement in the wedding celebrations. What you speak should not seem artificial.

If you have been asked to deliver a wedding reception speech, consider it a privilege. Respect this trust and give the best speech you can.
