Best Man: Aptly A Man Of Honor

The honor of being the Best Man is usually given to someone who is very close to the groom - be it his friend, brother or even his father. On the part of the groom, a lot of thought goes into selecting the person who he would wish to see in that role.

Personal Characteristics

While choosing the best man, it should be kept in mind that the person should be of legal age. Besides offering moral support, he should also be a person you can depend on. And most important, he should be capable of handling the various responsibilities that are attached to this title. Since his work starts months before the actual wedding and continues till post reception, he should be able and willing to spare that much time and make himself available all through.

Understanding Your responsibilities

If you are chosen for the role, then understand that the couple thinks that you are special and they are placing lot of faith in you. You are not only expected to look nice at the wedding celebration but also have to take on lot of tasks on behalf of the groom - before, at and after the wedding.

Before The Wedding

Bachelor's Party or Stag Party has become synonymous with every wedding. Organizing one is your responsibility. Consult beforehand with the groom to make sure that he wishes you to organize one.

You also need to be available to attend, say, the fittings for tuxedos; meetings or parties, prior to the wedding; and most important of all, the wedding rehearsals. All this can be total fun!

At The Wedding

On the wedding day, other than the couple themselves, the best man is the center of everyone's attention. You are responsible for getting the groom on time for the ceremony. You have see to it that the guests are comfortably seated.

During the ceremony, you will be standing next to the groom, and even be the guardian of the rings till they are exchanged. You will escort the Maid of Honor up the aisle directly behind the bride and the groom.

Most important of all, you act as a legal witness to the marriage and have to sign the marriage license.

After The Wedding

Once the wedding vows are exchanged, you have to prepare for the reception. Since the best man has to deliver the wedding speech, you may need to practice well in advance. You will also be proposing the wedding toast to the couple. Once the reception is over, you will have to make arrangements for the smooth exit of the couple. And yes, while everyone else may have left, you still need to be around to settle the payments for all the services at the wedding.

Small Costs For The Big Role

As a best man, you should be prepared to spend on some additional expenses such as to host the bachelor's party or to get your tuxedo. Like any other guest, it is customary for you to get a gift for the newly weds. In case you have to travel out side the city to attend the wedding, then you may have paying for the travel.

You may refer to online resources to get best man speech ideas and tips on performing to the very best of your abilities for a fulfilled experience. While your role as the best man may end with the wedding ceremony, your special relationship with the couple will carry on beyond.
